As the NBA regular season comes to an end, the stage for the real season is set to begin. The NBA playoffs is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. Unfortunately for us, the last 3 seasons ended pretty much the same way; with either the Cavs or Warriors taking home the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Even if we would love to see this “new” Cleveland Cavaliers beat the defending champion Golden State Warriors, there is probably a better chance at winning the Mega Millions Jackpot and Powerball on consecutive drawings.
However, for the first time in 3 seasons the outcome is almost certain to be different. The Warriors are not completely healthy and the surging Houston Rockets will be the number 1 seed in the Western Conference. While the Warriors will certainly be the number 2 seed, this slight shift in seeding could have a bigger impact than at first glance. For example, the Western Conference seeds 3-8 were so close that during the last few games of the season the seeding turned upside down about 3 times. Just 4 days ago The Spurs were in 5th place and the Wolves were 7th! As you know, in the NBA 4 days is just 1-2 games. It’s so competitive this year in just a game or two the seeding is totally different. So there you have it, The Spurs will square up against the defending champion Warriors.
Remember… during the 2017 playoff matchup between the same two teams, the Spurs were up 20 points before Kawhi Leonard went down with a season ending injury. The Warriors obviously went on to win the series, but what could have happened had he never been injured? The Spurs are a veteran laden team coached by a top 5 Coach of all time in Gregg Popovich. If we’re in the defending champs shoes, this is not the matchup we’d want in the first round, especially since Steph Curry and crew are a little banged up going into the playoffs.
This is just one of many interesting matchups that are sure to make this year’s playoffs ultra exciting and one for the record books. Our dream matchup this year would be the Cavaliers vs. Rockets in the NBA Finals, what matchup would you like to see?
