Rebel With A Cause! An Inside Look At ‘Movember’ & How To Celebrate

You are proud of your facial hair and all of its glory and next month is an opportunity to let it grow! By now you have heard of, and most likely took part in No Shave November.  However today we take a look at the celebration that is ‘Movember.’ ‘Movember’ is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of various cancers, such as prostate cancer. The goal is to “change the face of men’s health.” This new movement has grown tremendously over the past few years, and today we take a closer look at how it came about and how we can all be apart of it.

The history of Movember dates all the way back to 1999. A group of young men in Adelaide, South Australia, coined the concept for charity. It started with a group of 80 men and soon became a nationwide happening in Australia. In 2004 a group of folks created an event where 30 fellas would grow a mustache for 30 days promoting awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men which led to the eventual founding of the Movember Foundation. Since then the charity has raised $174-million worldwide expanding to South Africa, Europe, and North America by 2006. In 2010 they even launched The Moscars, an online global user-submitted video contest that helps Movember participants showcase their involvement. The movement has indeed grown over the years, and since 2004 has used Movember to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues around the world. The proceeds go toward various cancer and mental health foundations in their respective countries. It is an excellent way to get involved and brings men’s health into focus.

Want to get involved? Well, it is simple, head over to the Movember Foundation and sign up. All you have to do is grow out your mustache for thirty full days during November and put in the call to raise funds for men’s health. It is not hard, it is for a good cause, and you get to grow that mustache that you have always wanted. If you already have one, no worries, you can still sign up and still do what you can to help bring awareness to men’s health. Your mustache is your ribbon, so use it for something productive and valuable this year! Get involved with the Movember Foundation immediately!

The movement is an excellent way to bring awareness to something that should matter to us all. Cancer sucks, so why not do what you can to help with research? Do your thing, put down the razor and grow out some beautiful facial hair for a good cause and be a part of something bigger; be a part of the ‘Movember’ movement!
