Over time, the idea of wearing a suit has dramatically changed. Years back, suits matched, were oftentimes simply black (or another solid color), with shirts and ties that offered a categorically dignified aesthetic. But what does that even mean, really? Perhaps your place of business has a “suit-preferred” dress code, or you’re heading out to dinner with a special someone and there’s no room for your favorite pair of shorts in your ensemble. When it comes to suits nowadays, the opportunities are limitless. Let’s look at a few options of how to suit up without feeling fashionably stifled.
Ever since Kanye West helped further popularize the sport jacket with denim look, men have adopted it and totally revolutionized the concept. The key here is matching your separates. Find a great sport jacket, add a pair of distressed denims and sophisticated white tee. To keep things traditional, you can always swap for a button-down shirt and tie (or no tie at all). Just don’t be that guy and attempt a tie with a white tee. It never works out in your favor.
While black suits are the age old go-to color scheme for a sharp suit, they can often provide an unnecessary level of formalness, especially if the occasion calls for something simpler. You don’t want to give off a tuxedo vibe, when the environment is more casual, right? The solution? Venture out of your suit color comfort zone. Find lighter sport jackets against darker pants (or vice versa with the right color combo), or rock a whole suit with a new color. Take a chance! Also, if you’re trying to keep it cool, maybe skip the cartoonish ties. It can mess up your whole outfit.
Also, add a classy tie tack and a pair of shades. Accessories are key.
Fedoras work too, but of course a beard is always the best accessory.
Most importantly, be unique. Take a chance on patterned button-downs, rock a pin stripe, sub a tie with a scarf, do it all. The key to unconventional suits is this: there are no rules. Vibrant colors, earth tones, sharp accessories. These can all make a suit for any occasion. Find your style and run with it.
